How to clean a new piercing with sterile saline
- Wash your hands with soap and water.
- Saturate the piercing with sterile 0.9% saline — spray it, or hold dampened clean gauze on it for a few seconds to soften any crust.
- Gently wipe away loosened crust with clean gauze or a saline swab. Don't pick, and don't twist the jewellery.
- Pat dry with a fresh piece of gauze — never a shared towel.
- Repeat 1–2 times a day. More isn't better; overcleaning irritates a healing piercing.
What to use — and what to avoid
| Use | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Sterile isotonic 0.9% saline (spray, wipe or swab) | Alcohol / alcohol prep pads on the wound |
| Single-use gauze or saline swabs | Hydrogen peroxide and harsh antiseptics |
| Preservative-free, additive-free solution | Homemade sea-salt mixes that are too strong |
| Clean hands, fresh materials each time | Cotton buds that shed fibres; rotating the jewellery |
What makes a good aftercare saline
Not all saline is equal. For piercing and tattoo aftercare, look for solution that is sterile, isotonic (0.9% NaCl), preservative-free, drug-free and additive-free — nothing but salt and water, sterilised. Format matters too: a fine rinse, single-use saline wipes for on-the-go, and saline swabs for targeted cleaning. This is a cleansing rinse, not a medicine — it does not treat infection, so see a professional if a piercing looks infected.
Frequently asked questions
What saline should I use for a piercing?
A sterile, isotonic 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution with no additives or preservatives. Wound-wash saline and dedicated piercing saline are the same 0.9% concentration.
How often should I clean a new piercing?
Usually once or twice a day, plus after heavy sweating. Overcleaning irritates the area — follow your piercer's specific advice.
Can I use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on a piercing?
Better not to. Alcohol and hydrogen peroxide can dry out and irritate a healing piercing; sterile saline is the gentler, standard choice.
Is a sea-salt soak the same as saline?
Only if it is the right strength (isotonic, about 0.9%) and made with clean water — homemade mixes are easy to get wrong. A ready-made sterile 0.9% saline removes the guesswork.
